What are air source heat pumps?

Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems, or warm air convectors and hot water in your home. They can even get heat from the air when the temperature is as low as -15 ° C. The primary benefit is the reduced cost of fuel and the protection from rising energy bills. There is also no need for fuel deliveries and very little maintenance is required. In addition to these savings, air source heat pumps also qualify for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). This pays home owners a set tariff (similar to the feed-in tariff for solar panels) for heating their home by renewable sources. The scheme is designed to repay a large percentage of the cost of the heat pump.

What savings can be achieved?

Although inital installation costs are around £5,000 the financial benefits can be substantial. Depending on the existing heating system being replaced, it is possible to annually save up to £1,845 in energy bills and to receive up to £1,280 of RHI income per year.
